Medical laser and skin care specialist Laserase Bolton has launched a revolutionary new treatment to combat the signs of ageing. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment uses a patient’s own blood plasma to reduce facial lines and wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin.

PRP treatment – nicknamed ‘vampire treatment’ – is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure involving the reinjection of Platelet Rich Plasma taken from a person’s own blood into areas of the face and neck to treat wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin. It does not involve knives, nips or tucks, but has the rejuvenating effect of surgery, boosting the creation of new blood cells and collagen, and has proved popular with celebrities around the world.

First introduced to the UK in 2006, the treatment is now available locally at Laserase Bolton, located opposite the ambulance station on the Royal Bolton Hospital site.

Clinic Manager at Laserase Bolton, Julie Kershaw, says: “We’re proud to have introduced the revolutionary Platelet Rich Plasma treatment at our clinic in Bolton. This exciting non-surgical procedure uses the regenerative powers of a patient’s own blood plasma to reduce lines and wrinkles, leaving the skin younger, healthier and fresher looking.”

Lorna Jackson, Editor of www.consultingroom.com, the UK’s largest source of unbiased information on aesthetic treatments, says: “PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy is a treatment that has been taking the UK by storm in recent years. It has proven to be very popular with both practitioners and the consumer, either as a single treatment, or in combination with others to enhance the results of skin rejuvenation.

“The treatment uses platelets and growth factors which are harvested from your own blood sample to provide natural healing and stimulation to the area being treated. The idea of your own body helping to repair ageing and rejuvenate skin must be the ultimate win-win scenario when it comes to cosmetic treatments.”

Made famous by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, the PRP treatment is rapidly becoming one of the most sought after cosmetic treatments, with enquiries in the last quarter of 2014 up by 223%, according to WhatClinic.com. Although it has been used for some time to treat sports stars’ injuries – such as Tiger Woods – only recently has it been used for anti-ageing purposes.

The procedure involves a medical professional taking a small amount of blood from a person’s arm, in the same way as taking blood for a standard blood test. The blood is then spun in a centrifuge machine at high speed until the red and white blood cells have separated – a process that produces a plasma rich with platelets (very small cells which stimulate the growth of more cells). This Platelet Rich Plasma is then reinjected into the patients face, neck and décolletage and the rest is thrown away.

When they are injected into the skin, the platelets release growth factors – proteins which trigger the surrounding cells to proliferate. This in turn stimulates the repair of cells and increases the volume and rejuvenation of the skin. The growth factors induce collagen production and elastin, resulting in new skin cells being formed and thus an improvement in skin elasticity.

Julie Kershaw adds: “Basically, PRP treatment works by recreating and stimulating the body’s own natural healing process and one of the main benefits of this treatment over other skin rejuvenation treatments is that it is non-invasive and involves no foreign bodies. Because the material being injected back in to the patient is part of their own blood, there is very little chance of rejection. Although PRP treatment is very safe, it should of course only be carried out by medical practitioners once they have completed specialist training. At Laserase Bolton, we only employ experienced medical professionals, so patients can be assured of the very best standards of treatment and care.”
