Acne Scarring

We are not sure why some people are left with acne scarring and some are not. There is some evidence to suggest that this is hereditary and we know that those who suffer from severe cases of acne are more likely to be left with scars. It is not possible to predict exactly who will be left with scars and who will not.

Acne Scarring Treatments

Types of Acne scarring

There are two main types of acne scars that we are able to treat using a variety of different treatment options:

PIGMENTED ACNE SCARS

The pigmentation can range from pink, red, purple, brown or black depending on your skin tone and depth of the discolouration. This is the skin’s normal reaction to inflammation as is common in acne. We have three different treatment options available for pigmented acne scarring. Depending on the size and colour of scars we may use any or all of these treatments.

AFT-540 Intense Pulsed Light

The AFT540’s selective pulsed light energy is precisely absorbed by the melanin in the target area without damaging the surrounding skin. The melanin is broken into tiny fragments which are then absorbed by the body and eliminated.

Medical Skin Peels

These use gentle fruit acid known for their anti-inflammatory properties, soothe irritated skin and work to dissolve and control sebum.

Skin Care

As part of the consultation and treatment, we will devise a skin care regime that works to control, protect and correct the imperfections and compliment your treatment.

PITTED ACNE SCARS

These are depressed marks left in the skin’s surface. They can vary in size and shape and are the result of damage to the skin caused by acne.

N-Lite Laser

This is a pulsed dye laser that has proven to be successful when treating the moderate and less severe forms of acne scarring. Its low-energy beam helps repair damaged and pitted skin.

Micro-Needling

Harmony Pixel Laser

The Pixel Laser is believed by doctors to be a major breakthrough in treating acne scars. It creates a micro injury without disturbing the surrounding tissue. The skin tightens around these areas encouraging healing and improving the skin’s texture.

What treatment will I have?

This depends on the type of scarring you have. At your consultation we will create a treatment plan tailored to you and your skin. It may be that you have one of the above treatments or it may be that you will need a combination of treatments in order to achieve the desired results.

Does the treatment hurt?

All of the treatments for acne scars are considered “lunch-time treatments” as there is little to no recovery time involved, meaning minimal disruption to your everyday life. If you are having Dermaroller® therapy, then a topical anaesthetic is applied before treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends entirely on how well your skin reacts to treatment. At your consultation we will give you an idea of how many treatments we think you need. Some people will see a dramatic improvement after just one treatment but others may need more.
