Birthmarks can be separated into two categories: vascular birthmarks which are often pink, red or purple, and pigmented birthmarks, which are usually brown.
Birthmark Removal Treatments

Many people are born with birthmarks but these will usually disappear by the time they are four years old. It is unknown why some people get birthmarks and pigmentation and others do not.
Pigmented birthmarks such as Café-Au-Lait spots, Mongolian spots or Congenital Melancytic Nevi are usually harmless and do not need treatment but for many people they can have a serious negative effect on their personal and professional lives. Lasers have been used very successfully for the treatment of pigmented lesions for more than 25 years. We have used the Q Switched Ruby Laser for 17 years and it is still medically acknowledged as the laser of choice for most pigmentation. For pigmentation not suitable for Ruby Laser Treatment, we use Advanced Fluorescent Technology.Q Switched Ruby Laser
The Q Switched Ruby Laser produces extremely short pulses of high energy red light. This light is absorbed by the pigmentation, which heats up and breaks down into tiny particles. Once broken down these minute particles are then targeted by the body’s own immune system and removed gradually. Since the energy is selectively absorbed by the pigment, surrounding tissue is not usually effected. The length of treatment depends on the size of the pigmented area and more than one treatment is usually needed. Treatment with the Ruby laser is uncomfortable but the level of pain depends on where on the body is being treated. Some patients may blister after treatment but this will resolve in a week or so. Full recovery from either treatment usually takes between 4-6 weeks, during which time sun screen factor 30+ must be used or the area must be covered. Advanced Fluorescent Technology works in a similar way to the Ruby Laser. Each uses a different coloured light and works on different types of pigmentation. The AFT 570 works best on smaller, less noticeable marks whereas the AFT 540 is used for darker marks with a high concentration of melanin. The pigmentation is heated up and is similarly broken down into tiny particles. Once broken down, these minute particles are then targeted by the body’s own immune system and removed gradually. Since the energy is selectively absorbed by the pigment, surrounding tissue is not usually effected. The length of treatment depends on the size of the pigmented area and more than one treatment is usually needed. Treatment with the AFT 540 or 570 is not as painful; most people compare it to a snap with an elastic band. Full recovery from either treatment usually takes between 4-6 weeks, during which time sun screen factor 30+ must be used or the area must be covered. Treatment with the Q Switched Ruby Laser is painful but this depends on where on the body we’re treating. Most people tolerate AFT Pulsed Light treatment well and describe the sensation as a rubber band snap to the skin. The majority of patients require no anaesthesia, though topical anaesthetic is an option for sensitive skin.
Are there any side effects?
With the Ruby Laser, some patients may blister after treatment, this is normal and will usually resolve itself in a week or so. The skin will look and feel shiny and will return to normal in 4-6 weeks, after which time treatment can be repeated.
Side effects are rare with AFT Pulsed Light treatment. Immediately after treatment the skin may appear flushed, brown pigmented spots may appear darker and capillaries may be more visible. To help guarantee the best results, limit your exposure to the sun for several weeks before and after treatment.
How quickly will I see any results?
All results are gradual and you will see subtle improvements following each treatment. Everyone reacts differently to treatment and some will see a greater improvement in one treatment than others.
