Nail fungus

The treatment of nail fungus.

Nail fungus or onychomycosis is an infection caused by organisms called dermatophytes, these are common fungi. These fungal infections live on the outer layers of the skin and can eventually infect the nail itself.

Dermatophytes are microscopic fungi that like a dark warm and moist environment – the feet are perfect areas for their development. The fungus enters the nail bed through the spaces between the nail and the skin. Eventually they cause the nail to thicken and sometimes crumble as the infection grows. Once it takes hold the nail can loosen and eventually detach.

There are a selection of treatments that can help with this problem. Laser treatment is a new method, however the results are good.

The laser is absorbed into the lower layers of the skin and nail bed. This creates heat under the skins surface. This heat is sufficient to destroy the dermatophytes therefor allowing the nail plate to return to normal.

After your consultation you will have a patch test. Treatment frequency depends on the severity of the infection.
