Ashley’s story – tattoo removal

I’d wanted a tattoo of an owl for many years. They were my mum’s favourite animal and they’re mine, so I knew that no matter what, it would always be something that meant something to me. I spent months and months searching for the perfect owl and after trying and failing to find one I loved I sought out a tattoo artist I knew was excellent and asked her to design one for me.

Why I had my tattoo originally and why I am having it removed

I’d wanted a tattoo of an owl for many years. They were my mum’s favourite animal and they’re mine, so I knew that no matter what, it would always be something that meant something to me. I spent months and months searching for the perfect owl and after trying and failing to find one I loved I sought out a tattoo artist I knew was excellent and asked her to design one for me.

The night before my appointment to get it tattooed was the first time I saw the design. I wasn’t 100% sure of it, it was cute but was it for me? I told myself it was just nerves for the upcoming appointment to get it done. Once I’d had it done though, the excitement took over and I grew to love it. As time went by though, I began to feel like it was too big and even though I did like the design, I wished the tattoo itself was smaller.

After hearing about Laserase, I decided to take the plunge and get it removed. After my first consultation, I had a test patch lasered and I was surprised how little it hurt in comparison to what I was expecting. That’s not to say it didn’t hurt but it was definitely bearable. So I booked my first treatment for the following week once they could see how my skin had reacted.

First treatment

My first laser removal session again wasn’t as bad as expected. It was painful but something I could grin and bear. It took about 10 minutes for the nurse to laser the whole tattoo. The areas where there was the most black ink hurt the most, but this only took a minute or so.

Second treatment

On my second laser removal session, the nurse Joanne turned up the intensity of the laser and I could definitely tell the difference. This was a lot more painful than the first session and at one point I even contemplating asking her to stop but knowing it was something I really wanted removing I managed to stick the treatment out. Knowing the session only takes about 10 minutes also helped a lot because even though it hurt I knew it would be over soon and that the results would be worth it.

Third treatment

As I struggled with the intensity on my last treatment, Joanne suggested that I try rubbing some numbing cream on my tattoo an hour before my session and covering with cling film, this really helped. She left the laser intensity on the same as the last time but this time I could barely feel it, it was more like someone kept pricking my skin this time. The whole process was a lot easier using the numbing cream and I will definitely be using it again.
