What are Verrucas?
A Verrucae is a contagious and often painful wart virus on the sole of the foot also known as a plantar wart. These are irritating things and even if not painful they are embarrassing when you want to show off your feet in summer shoes or flip flops.
They are contagious and spread in places where people are barefoot such as in swimming pools changing rooms or at home, this is why once you have one you don’t want others to see it. So many people say they stop going swimming or to have a pedicure so people won’t see their Verruca.
Pain
A Verruca can be extremely painful which is why many people seek treatment from us at Laserase. On the feet gravity combined with your body weight effectively pushes them back into the skin, so they appear to be flat to the skin. Sometimes patients say it can feel that you are walking on something all the time.
They are not dangerous but they are infectious and unsightly. Meaning that many people want to get rid of them.
Causes of Verrucas
Verrucas are caused by a virus that enters the foot through tiny cuts or scratches. The pea-sized tumours occur on the soles of the feet most commonly. However they can also be found between the toes or under the toenails and can be a source of intense discomfort.
Do they go away by themselves?
Although people can naturally develop immunity to warts and verruca’s, it is quite common for them to reoccur within 2 – 5 years. You may wait for your body to develop its own natural defence against them. However, if they are ugly, painful and you are worried about them spreading them treatment is a fast, safe and effective procedure.
HOW DOES VERRUCAS REMOVAL WORK AT LASERASE BOLTON
At Laserase, verruca treatment is using the N Lite pulsed dye laser which is highly effective. The laser’s light is selective it treats the infected area without damaging the skin surrounding it. The light targets the blood vessels that have been infected by the plantar wart virus. It heats up the infected area, sealing off the blood supply. The verruca is therefore starved of blood and nourishment and dies. Following treatment the verruca dries up and falls off. Laser treatment for the removal of a Verruca is very successful. We treat even the most stubborn Warts and Verruca’s. Because the treatment is selective there is no open wound and therefore infection and complications are reduced compared to other options.
Number of treatments for Verrucas and Warts
Depends on the size and location or the wart or verruca. Some may be large and deeply rooted Verrucas may require several treatments.
Does it hurt
We won’t lie it’s a little uncomfortable as the laser is fired and heats the blood supply but it’s not too painful

Other foot conditions
Verrucas can easily be confused with corns and calluses. Corns and calluses are thick areas of skin that are caused by friction that can be identified by looking for normal skin lines like fingerprints on them. Verrucas are lumpy with no lines and often have a black dot in the centre which look like seeds, surrounded by a patch of hard, white skin.
